Human spontaneity and linguistic coverage: two related factors relevant to the performance of automatic understanding of ATC speech

چکیده
In this paper we make a critical revision of the state of art in automatic speech processing as applied to Air Traffic Control. We present the development of a new ATC speech understanding system comparing its performance and advantages to previously published experiences. The system has innovative solutions such as detecting the Air/Ground language spoken by Air Traffic Controllers in an international airport with two official languages and the ability to adapt to new situations by automatically learning stochastic grammars from data, eliminating the need to write expensive and eternally incomplete grammars. A relevant new feature is the use of a speech understanding module able to extract semantically relevant information from the transcription of the sentences delivered by the speech recognizers. Two main assessment objectives are pursued and discussed throughout the paper: the effects of human spontaneity and lack of linguistic coverage in understanding performance. The potential of this technology, ways of improvement and proposals for the future are also presented.

متن کاملThe Integration Of Automatic Speech Recognition into the Air Traffic Control System
Today, the Air Traffic Control (ATC) system relies primarily on verbal communication between the air traffic controllers and the pilots of the aircraft in the controlled airspace. Although a computer system exists that processes primary radar, secondary radar, and flight plan information, the information contained within the verbal communications is not retained. The introduction of Automatic S...
متن کاملThe Role of Language in Accusations of Witchcraft in Sixteenth- and Seventeenth-Century Spain
Linguistic factors played a significant role in the origin and spread of accusations of witchcraft in Early Modern Spain. The preoccupation with witches’ words is at its root a preoccupation about the power of speech and, to a great extent, of female speech. Studies in some Early European countries have connected aggressive female speech styles with accusations of witchcraft, and this article o...
